1. Who we are

MTHR TNG is a heritage language learning app operated as a sole trader in the United Kingdom. We are the data controller for any personal data you provide to us.

2. What data we collect

We collect the following personal data when you use MTHR TNG:

• Account data: your name and email address when you sign up
• Profile data: learner profile names, age groups, and selected avatars
• Usage data: lesson progress, streak data, and self-assessment responses
• Voice recordings: recordings you make of yourself repeating phrases within the app
• Payment data: subscription plan and billing status (card details are handled by Stripe and never stored by us)
• Device data: browser type and approximate location (country level) for analytics

3. Why we collect it

We use your data to:

• Create and manage your account and learner profiles
• Deliver lessons and track your progress
• Process subscription payments
• Send you account-related emails (e.g. password reset)
• Improve the app based on usage patterns

Our legal basis for processing your data is the performance of a contract (providing you with the service you signed up for) and, where applicable, our legitimate interests in improving the app.

4. Who we share your data with

We share your data with the following third parties:

• Supabase: our database and authentication provider, based in the US (covered by standard contractual clauses)
• Stripe: our payment processor, for handling subscription billing
• Vercel: our hosting provider, for serving the app

We do not sell your data to third parties or use it for advertising purposes.

5. Voice recordings

Recordings you make within the app are stored securely and used only to play back your own pronunciation within the app. We do not use your recordings to train AI models or share them with third parties without your explicit consent.

6. How long we keep your data

We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we will delete your personal data within 30 days, except where we are required to retain it for legal or financial reasons (e.g. billing records, which we keep for 7 years under UK law).

7. Your rights

Under UK GDPR, you have the right to:

• Access the personal data we hold about you
• Correct inaccurate data
• Delete your data (right to erasure)
• Port your data to another service
• Object to how we process your data
• Withdraw consent at any time where processing is based on consent

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.

8. Cookies & local storage

We use browser localStorage to store your session preferences (such as your selected learner profile and lesson progress) locally on your device.

We use essential cookies to maintain your login session. If you choose to accept analytics, we also use privacy-focused analytics cookies and local storage to understand how people use MTHR TNG so we can improve the product.

We do not use advertising cookies and we do not sell your data to advertisers.

9. Children's privacy

MTHR TNG accounts must be created by adults (18+). Child learner profiles can be added under an adult account. We do not knowingly collect personal data directly from children under 13 — all data for child profiles is entered by the responsible adult account holder.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes by email or in-app notice. The date at the top of this page will always reflect when it was last updated.
